Title: The Hunt for Alien Life: A wider Perspective

Lecturer: Dr. Peter Linde

A revolution has – again – taken place in astronomy. During the past two decades the previously hypothetical exoplanets have become very real. As of now, more than 3000 such objects have been discovered. This prompts a new analysis of the relationship between mankind and the Universe. Are we alone? Is somewhere someone looking at a sky, possibly different from ours, but nevertheless asking the same question?

This talk will discuss a set of fundamental questions:

  • Is our existence the result of a series of improbable events and circumstances?
  • Are there other planets similar to Earth?
  • Are we the only intelligent civilization in the Universe – and if so, why?
  • If not, can we communicate with an extraterrestrial civilization, and do we want to?
