The Stars are Ours – Don Kurtz – Prof. Astrophysics UCLAN (University of Central Lancashire)

Synopsis: “What good is astronomy?” Using both historical anecdotes and science, this talk will show how an improbable, unpredictable path led to the discovery of the ultimate energy source for humanity – the biggest payoff of all time. Along the way we will encounter castles, kings, sea battles and Shakespeare!

Don Kurtz obtained his PhD in astronomy from the University of Texas in 1976 and then spent 25 years at the University of Cape Town from postdoc to professor. After a spell as Professor of Astrophysics at the Observatoire Midi-Pyrénées in France, he moved to the University of Central Lancashire. He observes with some of the world’s largest telescopes and serves on many international scientific boards. He is a past-president of the International Astronomical Union’s Commission on Variable Stars and will shortly become a Vice President of the Royal Astronomical Society.
